Bellingham WA was originally a saw milling and gold mining community beginning in the mid 1800's. The City of Bellingham was formed by 4 settlements combining into one. Whatcom, New Whatcom, Sehome and Fairhaven came together in 1903 to become what is now Bellingham.
Today, Bellingham's larger employers are Western Washington University, St. Joseph Hospital, Bellingham School District and Haggen Grocery. A large portion of Bellingham's population is self-employed. Because of the incredibly scenery and outdoor life of Bellingham, many people choose to work from home with Internet based jobs.
