Bellingham began in the mid 1800's as a saw milling and gold mining community. The City of Bellingham was formed by 4 settlements combing into one. Whatcom, New Whatcom, Sehome and Fairhaven came together in 1903 to become what is now Bellingham.
Today, Bellingham's larger employers are Western Washington University, St. Joseph Hospital, Bellingham School District and Haggen Grocery. A large portion of Bellingham's population is self-employed. Because of the incredibly scenery and outdoor life of Bellingham, many people choose to work from home with Internet based jobs.
With a population of approximately 80,000, Bellingham is still not a big city. However, located between Vancouver BC and Seattle, WA you can still enjoy the luxuries of big city living less than a 2 hour drive away. Bellingham's real draw is the outdoor lifestyle.
